The title of this meetup comes from feminist critic Linda Nochlin’s 1971 essay of the same name. She posed her admittedly provocative question to bring attention to women’s accomplishments in art history. Her answer encompasses the nature of genius, the economics of artistic production, and the ways aesthetic standards are shaped. Nochlin, who had a storied career as a critic and educator, died on October 29 of this year. We’ll take a fresh look at this landmark essay in memoriam. “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” is here: http://www.artnews.com/2015/05/30/why-have-there-been-no-great-women-artists/
