“And then the occasion arose when I had to meet the white man’s eyes. An unfamiliar weight burdened me. The real world challenged my claims. In the white world the man of color encounters difficulties in the development of his bodily schema.”
–Frantz Fanon (1925-1961)
After our discussion about Bhabah’s take on Fanon, lets jump into Fanon’s own words. With responses to Sartre’s existentialism and the racism of colonialist France, Fanon questions race and the development of self in relation to the Other.
Come to this discussion ready to listen with a desire to understand The Fact of Blackness [PDF]*.
*Warning: the “N-word” and other racist language is used in this account of a man’s encounter with racist colonial France.
